Why Seamless Blending is the Number One Technique to Master as a Beginner

When it comes to eyeshadow, many images you see on social media look great because the eyeshadows are blended with no harsh lines. This doesn’t come from an expensive eyeshadow palette or an intricate eyeshadow look. It comes from being able to blend the eyeshadow so the eyeshadow has no harsh lines and it transitions well. Blending is the number one eyeshadow technique that every beginner should master. It is used in almost every eyeshadow look from a natural everyday look to a dramatic look for a night out. Mastering the technique of blending means that you can master any eyeshadow look, rather than trying an advanced technique.

The best way to practice this technique is to take two eyeshadow shades that are very similar. I recommend a light brown and a medium brown. Apply the light brown all over the lid and place the medium brown on the outer corner of the eye. At this point, you are not trying to get the medium brown eyeshadow to show up as much as possible. You are trying to blend it so there are no harsh lines. Take a big fluffy eyeshadow brush and gently go round in circles where the two eyeshadows meet. You want to apply as little pressure as possible. If you press too hard then you will move too much eyeshadow around and it will be patchy. If you do not press too hard then the eyeshadow will be blended.

A common technique that you will see is people loading up too much eyeshadow onto a brush. Many people will dip the brush into an eyeshadow and blend it onto their eyes straight away. This will apply too much eyeshadow in one place which will be hard to blend. An easy way to avoid doing this is to gently tap the brush after you have loaded it with eyeshadow. Any excess eyeshadow will fall off meaning that you will not apply too much eyeshadow in one place. You will know if you have the right amount of eyeshadow on the brush if it barely shows up. It is easy to add more eyeshadow but it is harder to get it off.

To master the technique of blending, I recommend practicing for 15 minutes a day. Take the two brown eyeshadows and practice blending them on one eye. Then remove them and repeat the technique. It doesn’t matter if you don’t do a great job, it’s all about the practice. Try to focus on how the brush feels when you’re blending and focus on the eyeshadow disappearing as you do this. If you see a harsh line then slow down the circles that you’re making and make them bigger. As you practice this daily you will get used to how much pressure you need to apply for the eyeshadows to blend.

Once you have mastered blending with two eyeshadows then you can bring a third eyeshadow into the mix. This eyeshadow will go in between the light brown and medium brown eyeshadow to make them transition better. At this point, the most important thing for you is to have patience and not get carried away with the colours that you’re using. Many people will try and practice with lots of different colours before they have mastered the technique which means they end up practicing the technique for much longer. If you stick to the same colours then you will be able to focus solely on the technique and you will be able to see your improvement every time you successfully blend the eyeshadows.
